Free pizza stirs Haiti controversy

At thewinter rally on January 15, Alex Pribble scored a three-point shot, winning free pizza for the entire school. The pizza, distributed in Ruby Scott gym on January 22, angered many students who felt that the money should instead be donated to Haiti.

Senior Alex Hodson said, “I think that the kids at Tam should have some sort of voice in the decision.  Maybe like some classroom votes or something because I think that most people would vote for the Haiti option.”
Although many agree that the money should be given to Haiti, district policy required that the money be used specifically to help the entire student body.
“We would like to donate the money to Haiti, but we can’t,” said freshman and leadership student Clare Geyer. “The money comes from various fundraisers and has to be spent on the students.”
However, at the event, booths organized by YouthGive, Interact Club, and social studies teacher Jane Hall were set up where students could make donations to help Haiti.  The donations recieved amounted to about $500.
Interact Club will be informing students during tutorial of jars that will be put in every classroom to encourage people to donate their spare change.  The money will be given to programs such as Partners in Health and the Yele Haiti Foundation.
