Parents prepare for Safe and Sober Grad Night
After months of hard work and planning by many different parents, the senior Safe and Sober Grad Night is soon approaching. Chaired by Jayne Greenberg and Patti Bertenthal, Safe and Sober Grad Night is open to all seniors and is free of charge aside from an optional donation. Grad Night will be chaperoned entirely by parents, and there will be additional security.
“The security crew for Safe and Sober Grad Night will be very familiar to all: Sergio Chavez, Ralph Wilson, and Jewel Barrow, all Tam High employees. In this instance, they are paid by the Safe and Sober Committee,” said Greenberg and Bertenthal.
Grad Night will take place at the Mill Valley community center, and this year the theme of grad night is “Survivor in the Tropics.”
When students arrive, their bags are examined by the check-in committee and if there is any alcohol or drugs it will be confiscated. The lifeguards will be checking the locker rooms regularly to be sure there is not any alcohol around the pool area.
There will be a variety of different activities and games, including swimming, ping pong, henna tattoos, flip photos, black jack, and more. Grad Night starts at 11 p.m. and goes until 4 a.m.
“I’m excited to go on the jumpy and soberly stay up all night with my friends,” said senior Jackson McDonald.
According to Bertenthal and Greenberg, 95 percent of the senior class usually attends. Every year the students have enjoyed the night because of all of the surprises and activities that are there for them.
There will be non-stop refreshments, from coffee bar drinks to a chocolate fountain and appetizers, and a bountiful pancake breakfast.
Grad Night is a tradition and has been going on at Tam for a number of years, and is a nice way for seniors to be able to end the year.
“I think it’s a good opportunity for everyone to be with members of their class one last time before we go our separate ways after graduation,” said senior Riley Knox.
While some students are excited for Grad Night, other seniors aren’t sure if it is worth it.
“I’m not entirely sure what there is to be excited about for Safe and Sober Grad night. I haven’t noticed any promotion for it, or maybe I just haven’t been paying attention as usual,” said senior Ian Barry.
“It is intended to be a safe place for seniors to have a great time with each other, together as a whole class for the last time,” said Bertenthal and Greenberg.
In the past, it has been a tradition for groups of friends to go up to the Headlands and watch the sunrise after Grad Night.
“After, I think I’m going with friends up to the top of Mt. Tam to watch the sunrise and go out to breakfast somewhere then crash for the day,” said senior Alyson Vallario.
